To keep the distributors happy, the direct selling companies started paying bonuses to distributors for their efforts and that was the start of the system known as "pyramid selling".
The concept of network marketing is basically an alternative way to sell products and services to the end user. The way business is traditionally done is by a manufacturer selling products to retail shops and then the retail shops sell the product to the consumer. In this industry, the middle man is cut out and the distributor is the one responsible for getting the product to the consumer and in return the distributor gets to make money.
As of today, there are tens of hundreds of different types of network marketing opportunities. Even though there is a large amount of negative criticism towards this industry from the government, a number of people who join this types of legal opportunities are growing.
Most people confuse this industry with the pyramid scheme industry. According to Forbes magazine, a pyramid scheme is when there is no product being sold. People are asked to invest money for no reason. This practice is illegal and can lead to some jail time.
